Kerala Unveils First Floating Bridge in Varkala, Boosting Water Sports
A significant development in Kerala’s tourism sector, the inauguration of the first floating bridge in Varkala promises to elevate the state’s beach tourism. As a Christmas and New Year gift, Minister PA Mohammed Riyas opened the floating bridge, marking the beginning of a project that aims to introduce similar structures in every district with beaches. With the goal of providing water sports opportunities locally, the project seeks to attract tourists who often travel to destinations like Goa and Thailand. The 100-meter-long and three-meter-wide floating bridge, a collaborative effort by Thiruvananthapuram District Tourism Promotion Council, the Department of Tourism, Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society, and Varkala Municipality, features a viewing platform and is equipped with safety measures for visitors. The initiative aligns with the state’s master plan for tourism development, contributing to economic prosperity and increased employment opportunities.

As part of the tourism initiative, the floating bridge in Varkala is equipped with safety features, including safety boats, life jackets, life guards, and the presence of local fishermen. The structure, constructed using approximately 1,400 high-quality plastic blocks, allows for a captivating view of the sea. Visitors can engage in various water sports, such as banana boat rides, jet skiing, speed boating, jet attacks, and ATV adventures. The entry fee for the floating bridge is set at Rs 120, providing tourists with a 20-minute immersive experience. The project not only enhances Kerala’s tourism landscape but also supports the state’s vision of becoming an international destination, positioning Varkala as a hub for water-based recreational activities.
