A 25-foot compound wall collapses over a house in TVPM, rescuing a family of six

Thiruvananthapuram: A six-member family, including a woman and her newborn baby, escaped with their lives after a concrete boundary wall collapsed on their house in Mudavanmugal, Poojapura.

It took nearly two hours of hard work to rescue an 80-year-old woman and her grandson who were trapped beneath the concrete bars. The two are not seriously hurt.

On Saturday, a house with a tin sheet roof on the Chitoorkonam palace road collapsed after midnight. Due to heavy rains, the adjacent house’s 25-foot-high and 30-foot-long concrete wall collapsed and fell over half of the house below.

Binu, 30, of Peroorkada, was in the house with his wife Sandhya, 23, son Jithin, 4, and 22-day-old baby girl Malu, as well as Sandhya’s brother Unnikrishnan, 26, and grandmother Leela, 80. The concrete wall collapsed over Unnikrishnan and Leela’s sleeping quarters in the kitchen. To save the elderly lady and her grandson, the fire and rescue services department launched a massive operation that included the use of cutters and the removal of debris.
