Five More Samples Test Negative for Nipah Virus in Kerala

The office of Kerala Health Minister Veena George has reported that five additional samples sent for laboratory testing have returned negative results for the Nipah virus. No new cases have been reported, and currently, 915 individuals are under isolation at their residences.

Minister Veena George conducted an analysis of the current situation in a core committee meeting. She emphasized the state government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system. Initiatives, including “One Health” activities, are being implemented to enhance coordination among various departments. A dedicated institution will be established to facilitate effective collaboration among departments and ensure year-round community surveillance.

Kerala has reported six cases of the Nipah virus, with two fatalities and four individuals, including a nine-year-old boy, undergoing treatment. The health minister referred to studies conducted by the ICMR and WHO, which identified Kerala and eight other states in India as having a probability of Nipah occurrence.

In response to the ongoing Nipah cases in Kozhikode district, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced a seroprevalence study to assess infection and immunity levels within the population. Population-based seroprevalence surveys provide valuable insights into disease burden, transmission patterns, and associated risk factors, as per WHO guidelines.
