Empowering Adults from Welfare Homes: Kerala Government’s ‘Thanteyidam’ Initiative

The Kerala government is on the verge of launching the ‘Thanteyidam’ initiative, a pioneering scheme designed to provide essential housing support to residents of government welfare homes who have crossed the age of 18. The primary objective of this initiative is to empower individuals, especially women, allowing them to create independent and sustainable careers.

Under the ‘Thanteyidam’ scheme, the state’s housing board is working diligently to allocate free houses or apartments to 12 eligible individuals within the current year. The selection process prioritizes employed residents of welfare homes, victims of POCSO cases, and landless individuals, ensuring that those in the utmost need receive the necessary support.

The beneficiaries will be chosen from a carefully curated list of proposed names, with the housing board providing fully furnished apartments featuring two rooms and a kitchen, all at no cost. This substantial support is made possible through the effective utilization of funds from the housing board’s project allocation, complemented by financial assistance from the social welfare department.

A crucial aspect of the ‘Thanteyidam’ initiative is ensuring the privacy and security of individuals involved in POCSO cases. To address this concern, apartment complexes are currently under construction in strategic locations, including Kozhikode, Kannur, and Wayanad districts. These complexes are not merely bricks and mortar but represent a beacon of hope and independence for those residing in government welfare homes.

The selection process involves thorough scrutiny by District Committees, consisting of key members such as the District Collector, DWCDO, WPO, DCPO, and DLSA representatives. These committees meticulously evaluate the applications before recommending deserving candidates to the State-level committee, ensuring transparency and fairness in the allocation process.

The ‘Thanteyidam’ initiative stands as a testament to the Kerala government’s commitment to social welfare, empowering individuals to break free from the cycle of dependency and forge their paths toward a brighter future.
