Kolkata Hospital Admits Migrant Worker with Nipah-Like Symptoms After Kerala Visit

A man who recently returned from Kerala has been hospitalized at Beliaghata ID Hospital in Kolkata due to displaying symptoms consistent with a Nipah virus infection, as confirmed by a senior health department official.

The individual, originally from Burdwan district, had been working as a migrant laborer in Kerala and was admitted to the hospital exhibiting symptoms such as high fever, nausea, and a throat infection.

Confirmatory tests for the virus have yet to be conducted on the man, who is in his mid-20s, as per a statement from one of his family members. The decision to closely monitor his condition has been made due to his return from Kerala, where several Nipah virus cases have been reported.

The health department official provided further details, explaining that the patient had initially sought treatment at a hospital in Ernakulam, Kerala, after experiencing a high fever. Subsequently, he was discharged from the hospital but fell ill again within a few days. Following this, he was transferred to the National Medical College and Hospital before being admitted to Beliaghata ID Hospital.
