India Monitors H9N2 Outbreak in China, Ensures Preparedness Against Avian Influenza

The Union Health Ministry of India is closely monitoring the reported outbreak of H9N2 cases and clusters of respiratory illness in children in northern China. In a recent statement, the ministry assured that there is a low risk to India from both the avian influenza cases reported in China and the clusters of respiratory illness.

The ministry emphasized that the increase in respiratory diseases reported in China in recent weeks is attributed to usual causes in children, with no identification of an unusual pathogen or unexpected clinical manifestations. A meeting chaired by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) discussed preparedness measures against human cases of Avian Influenza in India, considering a human case of H9N2 reported in China in October 2023.

The World Health Organization’s risk assessment indicates a low probability of human-to-human spread and a low case fatality rate among reported human cases of H9N2. The ministry highlighted the importance of strengthening surveillance across human, animal husbandry, and wildlife sectors while emphasizing coordination.

India affirms its preparedness for any public health exigency and adopts a One Health approach, ensuring a holistic and integrated roadmap to address potential public health issues. As the situation evolves, the country remains vigilant and proactive in safeguarding public health.
