Lok Sabha Elections: High-voltage Campaigning Concludes, Silence Period Begins

High-voltage campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections in Kerala will come to an end today at 6 pm, marking the culmination of efforts by candidates who have been actively engaged in campaigning well before the election date was announced. As per the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the final 48 hours leading up to polling day constitute a ‘silence period’, during which all election-related activities aimed at influencing the outcome of the election are prohibited. Only silent promotions are allowed during this period, with Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Kaul warning of strict action against any illegal formation of groups or organization of public events.

To maintain the integrity of the electoral process, measures have been put in place, including a ban on distributing money, freebies, gifts, or alcohol to influence voters. A ‘Dry Day’ has been declared, prohibiting the sale and distribution of alcohol until the voting process is completed. Furthermore, stringent checks on vehicles and restrictions on the presence of party activists from outside the constituency have been implemented. Additionally, the ban on displaying and carrying weapons with licenses will remain in effect until the election results are announced. Voting is scheduled to take place from 7 am to 6 pm on Friday.
