Cyclone Michaung Elevates Sea Levels, Triggers Warning in Tamil Nadu’s Coastal Areas

The impact of Cyclone Michaung is evident in Tamil Nadu’s Mahabalipuram beach, where the sea level has surged to approximately 5 feet. This surge has prompted authorities to restrict fishermen and tourists from accessing the shore. The Chennai Meteorological Department issued a warning, forecasting that the cyclone will move towards the northwest coast of Tamil Nadu and make landfall between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. In anticipation of the cyclone’s effects, very heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for districts like Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, and Kanchipuram over the next two days.

As a precautionary measure, the Chengalpattu district administration has implemented a ban on fishermen and tourists residing in coastal areas, particularly Mahabalipuram, from venturing into the sea. The public is advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary outings during the storm. The heightened sea levels, heavy rains, and associated risks have significantly disrupted daily life in and around Mahabalipuram. The weather office alerts residents to potential hazards, including damage to vulnerable structures, uprooting of trees, and disruptions to power and communication lines due to the cyclone’s impact.
