India Records 290 New Covid Cases, 6 Deaths in 24 Hours; Kerala Reports Majority of Fatalities

India has registered 290 fresh cases of Covid in the past 24 hours, with six reported deaths. Among the fatalities, four were from Kerala, and one each from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The country’s total active cases now stand at 2,059. Notably, around 92% of these cases are under home isolation. Despite concerns about the JN.1 variant, the currently available data suggests that it is not leading to an exponential rise in new cases or a significant increase in hospitalizations and mortality.

India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the Delta wave peaking during April-June 2021. At its zenith, the country reported 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, India has seen over 4.5 crore infections, and more than 5.3 lakh people have succumbed to the virus. However, the national recovery rate is encouragingly high at 98.81%. Over 4.4 crore people have recuperated from the disease, indicating effective management and treatment strategies. The vaccination campaign has also been robust, with 220.67 crore doses administered across the country, contributing to the ongoing efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
