Mumbai Billboard Collapse: Death Toll Reaches 12; FIR Registered by Police

The tragic incident of a billboard collapse in Mumbai has left a devastating toll, with the death count rising to 12 and over 60 individuals injured. The catastrophe occurred during a fierce storm in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. The collapsed billboard, measuring 70 by 50 meters, trapped numerous people under its debris at a petrol station in the eastern part of the city.

Rescue efforts were immediately initiated, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other authorities racing against time to locate survivors. Despite the valiant efforts of the rescue teams, the situation remained precarious, with four bodies still buried under the wreckage. The excavation process was hindered by the hazardous conditions posed by the petrol pump and surrounding debris.

Reports from municipal authorities indicated that 60 individuals had been rescued and admitted to hospitals for treatment. The storm, accompanied by strong winds, rain, and dust storms, wreaked havoc across Mumbai, uprooting trees, causing power outages, and disrupting the city’s train network. Flight operations at the international airport were temporarily suspended, leading to diversions of at least 15 planes.

In response to the tragedy, Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, announced a high-level inquiry into the incident. The injured were being treated at Rajawadi Hospital, and authorities were committed to ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Subsequently, Mumbai Police registered a case against the owner of Ego Media and others involved in the installation of the billboard. The case, filed under sections 304, 338, and 337 of the Indian Penal Code, underscores the gravity of the incident. It was revealed that the billboard was installed illegally, without obtaining the necessary permissions.

This devastating event serves as a grim reminder of the importance of adhering to safety regulations and conducting proper inspections of structures to prevent such tragedies in the future. As investigations continue, authorities are focused on providing support to the victims and their families while taking necessary steps to ensure accountability for the incident.
