Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly congratulated Labour Party leader Keir Starmer on Friday for his party’s decisive victory in the UK general elections. Modi expressed his enthusiasm for working together to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and the UK.
“Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Keir Starmer on the remarkable victory in the UK general elections. I look forward to our positive and constructive collaboration to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in all areas, fostering mutual growth and prosperity,” said Modi.
Modi also praised the outgoing British Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak for his effective leadership and significant contributions to enhancing India-UK relations during his tenure. “Best wishes to you and your family for the future,” he added.
Starmer is poised to become Britain’s next prime minister following his Labour Party’s overwhelming majority win in the parliamentary elections, which resulted in a significant defeat for incumbent premier Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party.
Knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to law and criminal justice, Starmer spent much of his career in the legal field before transitioning to politics. He was first elected as Labour’s member of Parliament from London in 2015. Starmer, a father of two teenage children with his NHS employee wife Victoria, who have chosen to stay out of the political spotlight, declared in his victory speech that the promised change will commence immediately.
Born in London to a toolmaker father and an NHS nurse mother, Starmer grew up in Oxted, Surrey. He has spoken emotionally about his mother, Josephine, who suffered from Still’s disease and passed away a few weeks before he first became an MP in 2015.
