Heavy rains continue to batter Kerala, prompting the collectors of seven districts to declare a holiday for schools and educational institutions on Tuesday. The affected districts include Kottayam, Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Thrissur. However, residential schools will remain open, and previously scheduled examinations will proceed as planned. In Kannur, holidays are also declared for schools and colleges in Thalasserry, Taliparamba, and Iritty Taluks, though teachers are required to attend, and exams will be held as scheduled.
The relentless rains have led to rising water levels in rivers, causing significant distress in North Kerala. In Kozhikode, heavy rains since Monday morning have submerged the Chembukadavu Bridge, endangering tribal families and trapping residents in Kaithappoyil.
Wayanad’s Mundakai region is also experiencing intense rainfall, increasing the flow into the Banasura Sagar Dam. A red alert may be issued if the water level rises by 15 cm, though current levels suggest minimal risk of waterlogging if the dam shutters are opened.
In Idukki, rainfall has intensified, leading to the opening of the shutters at Mattupetti, Kallarkutty, and Pabla dams. While the water discharge has been reduced, there remains a possibility of releasing more water if levels continue to rise. The water level in Idukki Dam is at 2,360 feet, while Mullaperiyar Dam stands at 130 feet.
Thiruvananthapuram has also been experiencing heavy rains and strong winds intermittently throughout the day.
