The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, originally scheduled for August 10, has been postponed due to the devastating landslide in Wayanad. The event will now take place on September 7. The decision followed a special meeting chaired by Collector Alex Varghese, who considered both canceling celebrations and proceeding with the race on the original date.
The landslide in Wayanad’s Meppadi Panchayat, which occurred early on Tuesday, has claimed 318 lives, with 298 people still missing. In response to the tragedy, US President Joe Biden extended his condolences, expressing sympathy for those affected and praising the recovery efforts.
Last year’s race saw 72 boats participate, including 19 snake boats (chundan vallams), across various categories. The event was also notable for its environmental efforts, with Haritha Karma Sena personnel working to prevent pollution.
The postponement allows organizers to respect the gravity of the current situation and adjust their plans accordingly.
