Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has assured that there are currently no safety concerns regarding the 125-year-old Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki. Responding to questions about Congress MP Dean Kuriakose’s recent remarks in the Lok Sabha, where the dam was described as a “water bomb” and calls were made for its decommissioning, Vijayan emphasized that the state government’s position on the dam remains unchanged. He confirmed that there is no immediate cause for worry and reiterated the government’s stance on the issue.
While Tamil Nadu maintains that the dam is “absolutely safe,” Kerala has been vocal about its demand for a new dam to replace the existing one. The Mullaperiyar dam, constructed in 1895, has been a point of contention between the two states, with Kerala seeking a more modern structure to ensure long-term safety.
