Minnu Mani, a standout all-rounder from Kerala and a key player in the Indian women’s national cricket team, will no longer be representing her home state in domestic cricket. Instead, she will be playing for the Railways team, a move that has caused disappointment among Kerala cricket fans. This decision comes as a result of Mani’s status as a designated railway employee, which mandates that she represents Railways in domestic competitions.
Mani, who is currently touring Australia, has been in exceptional form, recently taking an extraordinary 10-wicket haul in a Test match between India A and Australia A. Her cricket journey began in Kerala at the age of 16, and she has since made significant strides in her career. Last year, Mani made history by becoming the first female cricketer from Kerala to represent India, making her debut in a T20 match against Bangladesh on July 9, 2023.
The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) had hoped that Mani would continue to play for Kerala in domestic tournaments, recognizing her as a cornerstone of the state’s cricketing success. However, the Railways’ policy, which requires employees to play exclusively for its team, has necessitated her move. This policy also affects Asha Sobhana, another Kerala-born cricketer employed by Railways.
Minnu Mani’s departure is seen as a significant loss for Kerala’s domestic cricket, as she has been a key figure in the state’s cricketing landscape.
