Thiruvananthapuram: Despite the government’s assurances that no policy decision has been made regarding the establishment of an atomic power station in Kerala, the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is moving forward with preliminary steps related to the initiative. The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) in Bengaluru, a central government institution, has commenced a study to identify a suitable location for the atomic power station. This study, initiated at the behest of KSEB, is expected to be completed within six months. Interestingly, it appears that the office of the Electricity Minister is unaware of this ongoing study.
KSEB has reportedly identified Athirappilly and Cheemeni as potential sites for the project. Athirappilly was previously considered for a hydroelectric power project, which was eventually abandoned due to environmental concerns. Similarly, Cheemeni had been proposed for a coal power station, but the project was dropped due to technical challenges.
Currently, KSEB is focused on completing the preliminary studies before the government makes any policy decision regarding the atomic power station. The decision to conduct these studies at this stage suggests that KSEB is keen to have all necessary information and groundwork in place should the government decide to move forward with the atomic power station project. The outcome of these studies will be crucial in determining the feasibility and potential environmental impact of the proposed sites, particularly given the previous controversies surrounding large-scale power projects in Kerala. As the studies progress, it remains to be seen how the government and the public will respond to the idea of an atomic power station in the state.
