Water lilies, the national flowers of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, are deeply symbolic of the rich cultural heritage and peaceful beauty of these nations. In Kerala, the village of Malarikkal in the Kottayam district has gained popularity in recent years for its stunning water lily fields. The landscape of Malarikkal, with its vibrant pink flowers spread across the serene countryside, resembles a scene from an impressionist painting. These beautiful water lilies, emerging from the muddy fields, are truly nature’s treasures, captivating visitors with their majestic seasonal bloom. The warm hospitality of the villagers and their communal spirit make the water lily season an unforgettable experience. Where is Malarikkal?
Malarikkal is located at the confluence of the Meenachilar and Kodurar Rivers. The village gets its name from the ‘malari’ vortexes formed in the water as the river flows forcefully. However, the water lilies, known as ‘malar’ in Malayalam, have now become the primary reason for the village’s fame. The water lilies typically bloom during July, August, and September. Although the bloom was slightly delayed this year, the fields were adorned with vibrant pink hues on the first day of Chingam, marking the Malayalam New Year in grand style. Visitors are advised to arrive by 8 am to fully appreciate the flowers. Boatmen are available from 5:30 am, offering rides for Rs 100 to allow closer views of the blooms. For extended photo shoots or videos, prices may vary. In addition to the pink flowers, crimson and white lilies also grace the fields. Small boats have been brought in from Kanyakumari to enhance the tourist experience. The flowers continue to attract visitors until October, when they begin to fade.
Are these really weeds?
During the agricultural season, these fields are used for paddy cultivation. To the farmers, the water lilies are merely ‘weeds’ that take over the fields between paddy cycles. The seeds of these water lilies lie dormant in the mud, sprouting when the fields are refilled with water. The vibrant pink blooms captivate visitors until the water is drained for the next farming season.
How to Reach Malarikkal
To reach Malarikkal from Kottayam, head to Illikkal Junction and take a left onto Thiruvarppu Road. Cross the Kanjiram bridge on the Kanjiram Boat Jetty Road, and you will arrive at Malarikkal. If coming from Kumarakom, take a right onto Thiruvarppu Road at Illikkal. It is recommended to reach Malarikkal before 7 am, as the flowers begin to wilt once the sun rises. Kanjiram Malarikkal is 9 kilometers from Kumarakom and 7.5 kilometers from Kottayam.
