Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is expected to experience continuous rain over the next five days, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alerts for several districts. Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Malappuram are currently on alert for isolated heavy rain, with expected rainfall ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Yellow alerts have also been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur on October 5th, followed by additional alerts in Kasaragod on October 6th and 7th. Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam will also be impacted on October 7th.
A cyclone forming near Lakshadweep is expected to intensify the rain, and thunderstorms are predicted in isolated parts of Kerala. Over the next few hours, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected in areas like Alappuzha, Palakkad, and Wayanad. Winds reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h may also accompany these weather conditions.
The IMD has cautioned the public to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms as they can pose a serious threat to life and property. Lightning, strong winds, and heavy rainfall can damage communication networks, electrical appliances, and cause severe accidents. The public is urged to follow safety measures such as staying indoors, avoiding contact with electrical devices, and refraining from outdoor activities like fishing, playing, and flying kites during storms. People are advised to avoid sheltering under trees or open areas, and those traveling should seek safe indoor locations until the thunderstorms pass.
These safety guidelines are crucial, as thunderstorms can be unpredictable, and lightning may strike even without visible signs. Residents are encouraged to tie down objects that may fall in high winds, avoid using landline phones, and refrain from collecting water from taps during the storm.
