Onion Prices Skyrocket Amid Heavy Rains in Major Indian States

Harvest Delays and Crop Damage Lead to Price Surge, Inflation on the Rise

Onion prices continue to soar across India, driven by heavy rains that have severely impacted the harvest in key onion-producing states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Due to the adverse weather conditions, the onion harvest has been delayed by up to 15 days, leading to reduced supply and skyrocketing prices. Wholesale onion prices in some regions have reached as high as Rs 65 per kilogram, while retail prices in states hover between Rs 55 and Rs 60 per kilogram. In an effort to reduce transportation costs and stabilize prices, onions are being transported to North India by train. The government is also stepping in to control prices in the northern states, particularly in light of the upcoming Diwali season, which traditionally sees high demand for onions and other essential goods.

This surge in onion prices, combined with rising costs for tomatoes and cooking oil, has significantly contributed to India’s overall inflation. The inflation rate increased to 5.49 percent in September, largely driven by food inflation, which jumped from 5.66 percent in August to a staggering 9.24 percent in September. The recent hike in import duties on cooking oil has further exacerbated the situation, putting additional pressure on household budgets.

With harvest delays and supply disruptions expected to persist, consumers are likely to face continued high prices for onions and other essential commodities in the coming weeks.
