Tourists visiting Munnar will soon have the chance to witness the region’s stunning Western Ghats from the sky, thanks to a new seaplane tourism initiative. The project, which plans to launch a scenic flight from Bolgatty Palace in Kochi to Mattupetty Dam in Munnar, has completed its preliminary site inspections, and test flights are scheduled to begin within a week. This unique seaplane service, designed to take off and land on both water and land, can carry up to eight passengers. It provides an unforgettable experience with its large windows, offering panoramic views of Munnar’s pristine landscapes from the skies.
To facilitate the service, a water aerodrome is expected to be constructed near the boat jetty at Mattupetty Dam. A team of experts, including representatives from the Airport Authority of India, the dam safety department, CIAL, and the electricity department, inspected the dam site and deemed it ideal for the seaplane’s operations. The forest department officials have also conducted further evaluations to ensure environmental safety and suitability.
In addition to the aerial experience, visitors can explore Munnar’s famed Eravikulam National Park, renowned for its rich biodiversity, including the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. The park, covering 97 square kilometers, is home to unique species of butterflies, birds, and other wildlife. For adventure enthusiasts, trekking paths provide opportunities to experience the park’s scenic beauty up close. Visitors can witness the striking natural phenomenon of the Neelakurinji blooms, which transform the hills into a mesmerizing shade of blue every 12 years, attracting tourists from all over the globe to Munnar’s enchanting landscapes.
