Chennai: South Indian film industry icon Delhi Ganesh, who left an indelible mark with roles in over 400 films, including notable appearances in Malayalam and Hindi cinema, passed away in Chennai’s Ramapuram locality last night at the age of 80. Ganesh had been struggling with age-related health issues and was under medical care. Originally from Tirunelveli, he will be laid to rest in Chennai today.
Delhi Ganesh, born as Ganeshan, stepped into the world of cinema in 1976 with K. Balachander’s “Pattina Pravesam.” It was Balachander who renamed him “Delhi Ganesh,” a title that became synonymous with his prolific career in Tamil cinema. While known primarily for his Tamil roles, Ganesh’s work spanned other languages as well. He also lent his voice to renowned actors like Chiranjeevi, Prathap Pothen, Raveendran, and Nedumudi Venu, showcasing his versatile talents beyond acting.
Ganesh’s contributions to cinema earned him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award in 1979 for his role in Paasi and the esteemed Kalaimamani Award in 1994. His journey to acting was unconventional; he served in the Indian Air Force from 1964 to 1974, eventually leaving the service to pursue his passion for cinema. His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from celebrities and fans alike, marking the end of an era for Indian cinema and celebrating his extensive legacy on screen.
