In an exciting new development for Kerala’s tourism sector, the Water Transport Department is introducing small, solar-powered boats that are set to revolutionize inland water tourism. These boats, capable of carrying up to 20 passengers, will operate across several districts including Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Designed with modern amenities, the boats aim to offer a unique and eco-friendly travel experience, highlighting Kerala’s natural beauty while promoting sustainable tourism.
In addition to these smaller boats, a larger 30-seat solar-powered boat is being developed specifically for the backwaters of Kuttanad, a popular region for its scenic waterways. Kollam will also see the introduction of boats equipped with outboard engines, taking tourists on explorations of the mangrove areas of Munroe Island. For a truly memorable backwater adventure, a new trip from Vaikom to the picturesque Kakkathuruthu Island in Alappuzha is being launched, a location that has already gained recognition on the National Geographic Channel’s World Tourism Map.
Director Shaji V Nair emphasized that the new fleet aims to enhance the tourism experience while ensuring accessibility for local communities. These boats are part of the department’s broader initiative to diversify water transport services and attract more tourists to the state, capitalizing on the growing demand for eco-tourism.
