Have you recently undergone coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG)? Ensuring a successful recovery requires a proactive approach and adherence to expert recommendations. Dr. Bipeenchandra Bhamre, a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai, shares key precautions to aid in a smooth and efficient recovery journey.
CABG, commonly referred to as bypass surgery, addresses blocked or narrowed arteries caused by conditions like atherosclerosis. This procedure not only restores blood flow to the heart but also significantly enhances a patient’s overall well-being, enabling them to return to daily activities with improved vitality.
Recovery is a gradual process, often beginning with a week-long hospital stay, including three days in the ICU. Patients may initially experience pain from fresh stitches, which typically subsides significantly within four days. Ambulation starts within 24 hours post-surgery, progressing from sitting at the bedside to light walking by the second day.
Upon discharge, patients are guided on a recovery plan, which includes wound care for 2-3 weeks and the following lifestyle modifications:
Avoid smoking and alcohol to promote healing.
Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while minimizing sugar, salt, and saturated fats.
Monitor water intake to manage temporary weight gain.
Incorporate light physical activity, such as 30 minutes of exercise daily, after consulting a doctor.
By respecting the recovery timeline and adopting these healthy practices, patients can regain strength and improve their quality of life post-surgery.
