Tiruvannamalai: Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu have caused a significant landslide in Tiruvannamalai district, with a massive boulder crushing houses on the lower slopes of the famous Annamalaiyar Hill. Official reports suggest that approximately five to seven individuals may be trapped under the rubble.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening amidst ongoing heavy downpour, severely complicating rescue efforts. Fire and rescue personnel, led by District Collector D. Baskara Pandian and Superintendent of Police M. Sudhakar, rushed to the site to oversee operations. According to officials, the darkness and persistent rainfall are hindering efforts, making it difficult to ascertain the exact number of people trapped or the extent of the damage.
“The large boulder fell on huts situated on the hillside. Rescue operations are in progress, but heavy rain poses challenges. We estimate that five to seven people might be trapped,” said a fire department official.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is expected to join the rescue mission soon to enhance relief measures. Authorities are working around the clock to ensure the safe recovery of those affected. The situation underscores the risks posed by extreme weather conditions in vulnerable areas. Residents are urged to exercise caution and adhere to official advisories as rescue efforts continue.
