Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram International Airport witnessed significant disruptions on Saturday after a kite flying at approximately 200 feet near the runway delayed flight operations for several hours. The incident caused four flights to be diverted and two others to be grounded temporarily, impacting schedules and operations at the airport’s aviation training center.
The kite was observed in the areas of Muttathara Ponmara Palam and Vallakkadavu Sulaiman Street, both located close to the airport. Authorities immediately implemented emergency safety protocols, instructing pilots of incoming flights to perform a “go-around” and circle the airport, while departures were delayed as a precaution.
Among the affected flights were Air India Express from Muscat, Air Arabia from Sharjah, Air India from Delhi, and Indigo from Bengaluru, all of which were asked to delay their landings starting around 4:20 PM. Additionally, outbound flights to Hyderabad and Bengaluru were temporarily grounded.
After two hours, the kite eventually landed, allowing normal flight operations to resume. However, the individual responsible for flying the kite remains unidentified. The incident highlights the challenges of ensuring aviation safety near residential areas and the importance of strict regulations to prevent such occurrences in the future.
