Understanding Itchy Armpits: Causes, Cancer Concerns, and Soothing Tips

Could an Itchy Armpit Signal a Serious Health Condition?

Experiencing an itchy armpit is often linked to common causes such as excessive sweating or bacterial and fungal infections. However, healthcare experts caution that persistent or unexplained itchiness in the armpit can sometimes signal a more serious condition, including lymphoma or inflammatory breast cancer.

Lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, may cause swelling in the lymph nodes located in the armpits, neck, or groin. Symptoms of lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, fever, night sweats, fatigue, and sudden weight loss. There are over 70 types of lymphoma, primarily divided into Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Inflammatory breast cancer, though rare, can present with itching as a key symptom. Other signs include breast tenderness, redness, swelling, thicker skin with an orange-like texture, noticeable size differences between breasts, nipple retraction, and localized color changes on one-third of the breast.

A 2022 study involving over 300,000 participants revealed that unexplained armpit itching could occasionally indicate lymphoma, though cancer was diagnosed in only 0.4% of the cases. The National Cancer Institute advises seeking medical attention for body-wide itching lasting over two weeks or persistent localized itching with additional cancer-related symptoms.

Tips to Prevent and Soothe Itchy Armpits:
Keep the area dry.
Shower immediately after workouts.
Gently pat the armpit dry after bathing.
Opt for sleeveless or loose-fitting cotton clothing.
Avoid tight outfits that trap sweat and moisture.
If your symptoms persist or are accompanied by other warning signs, consult a doctor promptly for a thorough evaluation.
