Kochi: A shocking incident occurred at Kaloor’s Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium when Thrikkakara MLA Uma Thomas fell from an inadequately secured stage during a public event. The footage, obtained shows Uma Thomas walking toward the front row of the gallery, sitting down, and then standing to greet other dignitaries, including Minister Saji Cherian. As she attempted to interact with the crowd, she lost her balance and tragically fell nearly 20 feet onto concrete slabs, resulting in severe injuries, including to her head and lungs.
The lack of proper safety measures on the stage has raised alarms. The temporary stage, set up hours before the event, was poorly constructed without proper clearance from the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). The stage, placed above two rows of seats, was only cordoned off by a simple queue management barrier, offering little protection.
Thomas remains in critical condition at a Kochi hospital, currently under intensive care and ventilator support. Despite the severity of her injuries, her condition has shown signs of improvement, with progress in both her responsiveness and lung function. The incident has sparked concerns regarding event safety, urging authorities to review and enforce stricter guidelines for public gatherings.
