US President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to take control of Gaza has sparked intense global backlash, prompting the US administration to backtrack on the plan. His announcement, which suggested relocating over two million Palestinians from Gaza temporarily, was met with widespread condemnation. The United Nations warned against the plan, stating that any forced displacement of Palestinians could constitute “ethnic cleansing.”
Trump’s plan, which he initially presented during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, proposed that the US “take over” Gaza, claiming responsibility for rebuilding the war-torn area. However, Trump’s Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, attempted to ease tensions by clarifying that the displacement would be temporary and would not involve US troops on the ground. Despite this, critics, including Palestinian officials, Arab leaders, and rights organizations, swiftly denounced the plan as “racist” and “aggressive.”
Global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, condemned the forced displacement, warning that it would destabilize the region and violate international law. The European Union, the UAE, and China also opposed the proposal, emphasizing that Gaza should remain part of a future Palestinian state.
In response, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas labeled the proposal a “serious violation” of international law, insisting that Palestinian rights are non-negotiable.
