Ghee: The Timeless Treasure the West Just ‘Discovered’

How an Ancient Indian Culinary Staple is Being Rebranded as a "New" Superfood

The internet is once again abuzz with a so-called “game-changing” kitchen hack: melting butter until it turns golden brown, resulting in a nutty, aromatic delight. Many Western influencers are hailing it as a revolutionary technique, dubbing it a “butter glow-up.” But for Indians, this is nothing new—it’s just ghee, a staple that has been a part of our culture for millennia.

Often referred to as “liquid gold,” ghee has been an integral component of Indian cuisine, Ayurveda, and religious rituals for over 5,000 years. It has been mentioned in the Rigveda, used in sacred Hindu ceremonies, and praised for its health benefits. Indian food historian Kalyan Karmakar even described it as the “purest food on Earth.” Yet, despite its deep-rooted history, ghee is now being repackaged for a Western audience under the label of “clarified butter” and sold in high-end stores at premium prices.

This isn’t the first time an Indian culinary gem has been rebranded for the Western market. Take turmeric, for instance—used in India for centuries as a medicinal and culinary ingredient—before it became a trendy “superfood” in the West. The same happened with yoga, which was originally a spiritual practice but was later commercialized as a fitness trend. Now, ghee is having its moment, gaining traction thanks to keto and paleo diets that emphasize its healthy fats and gut-friendly properties.

The growing global interest in ghee has led to a booming industry. High-end supermarkets in the US and Europe now stock jars of “artisanal ghee,” sometimes infused with truffle or exotic herbs, at prices far higher than what we find in our local markets. While it’s amusing to see an ancient Indian ingredient suddenly being treated as an innovative discovery, there’s also something positive about its newfound global recognition.

Rather than being frustrated by this Western reinvention, perhaps it’s time to embrace the global appreciation of this time-honored Indian tradition. However, instead of calling it “better butter,” influencers should simply acknowledge its true identity—ghee, a culinary treasure that has enriched Indian households long before social media trends made it “cool.” So the next time you see someone online claiming they’ve unlocked a magical way to enhance butter, just smile, grab a paratha, and enjoy the ghee we never forgot.
