Venjaramoodu Murders: Afan Restrained in Hospital as Police Investigate Possible Financial Motive

Accused Confesses to Killing Six; Authorities Probe Debt-Related Dispute and Other Possible Triggers

Afan, the 23-year-old accused of murdering six individuals in Venjaramoodu, has been admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital after an alleged suicide attempt. He reportedly consumed rat poison mixed with kuzhimanthi before being taken into custody. Currently, he is under police surveillance in the 32nd pay ward, where he has been restrained after attempting to remove his cannula. Reports suggest he has been exhibiting signs of distress in the hospital.

On Monday, Afan voluntarily walked into the Venjaramoodu police station and confessed to killing six people across three houses spanning a 16 km radius. The confirmed victims include his grandmother Salma Beevi (88), paternal uncle Latheef (69), aunt Shahida (59), younger brother Afsan (13), and girlfriend Farsana. His mother, Shemi, was also attacked and remains in critical condition at a private medical college hospital.

Authorities suspect that Afan might have been under the influence of drugs while committing the crime, and his blood samples have been collected for analysis. Investigators are still determining his exact motive, though financial difficulties appear to have played a role. Neighbours stated that the family had been struggling with debts and had become reclusive in recent months. Reports indicate that Afan had borrowed money and sought financial assistance from relatives, but they refused to help, which may have triggered the violent act.

Two days prior to the murders, Afan had brought his girlfriend, Farsana, home, leading to objections from his family. However, her family had approved of their relationship and agreed to their marriage. Farsana, a BSc Chemistry student in Anchal, had reportedly been in a relationship with Afan for some time.

Police continue to explore multiple angles, including Afan’s financial troubles, family disputes, and possible drug use, to establish the full circumstances behind the shocking crime. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities expected to question him further in the coming days.
