The enchanting bioluminescent phenomenon, locally known as ‘Kavaru,’ has returned to the coastal villages of Kumbalangi and Chellanam in Kochi, drawing crowds eager to witness the mesmerizing electric-blue glow in the pokkali fields. This natural spectacle, famously depicted in the Malayalam film Kumbalangi Nights, occurs when microscopic organisms like bacteria, algae, and plankton emit light due to the high salinity of the water, creating a stunning visual effect.
Kavaru, or ‘cold light,’ is a defense mechanism used by these organisms to attract mates and deter predators. The phenomenon is most visible during summer when the water in the pokkali fields reaches peak salinity. While last year’s Kavaru appeared in Kumbalangi as early as February, this year’s display has been delayed due to high tides and is primarily visible in Chellanam. The glow is brightest after 2 am when moonlight is less intense, but by mid-March, it can be seen from dusk onwards as the full moon wanes.
The popularity of Kavaru surged after Kumbalangi Nights showcased the magical phenomenon, attracting tourists from across Kerala and India. However, locals have raised concerns about the lack of facilities and crowd management for visitors. Despite this, the villages remain a must-visit destination for those seeking to experience the natural wonder of bioluminescence.
