AI Revolutionizing Pregnancy Scans: Faster Detection of Foetal Abnormalities

UK trials demonstrate AI's efficiency in identifying foetal health issues

A groundbreaking UK trial has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) can detect foetal abnormalities nearly twice as fast as traditional methods while maintaining the same level of accuracy. The study, conducted by King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, was published in the NEJM AI journal and focused on enhancing prenatal screening.

The research involved 78 pregnant women and 58 sonographers, with a primary focus on detecting heart abnormalities in 20-week scans. The AI-powered system accelerated the scanning process by 42%, making it more efficient and reliable. Unlike conventional methods, AI-assisted scans eliminated the need for sonographers to pause, measure, and save images manually, significantly streamlining the process.

Lead researcher Thomas Day emphasized the potential of AI to enhance patient care. “Our findings show that AI-assisted scans are just as accurate but significantly faster. This innovation can allow sonographers to dedicate more time to supporting expectant parents, ensuring a more comfortable and reassuring experience,” he stated.

One of the trial participants, Ashleigh Louison, shared her personal experience with the AI-driven scans. The technology helped detect a heart condition in her unborn son, Lennox, allowing for early intervention and planning. “Knowing about Lennox’s condition in advance was crucial,” she said. “Some abnormalities can be challenging to identify, so having an AI system that enhances detection is incredibly promising.”

With its ability to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and patient experience, AI-powered sonography could revolutionize prenatal care, offering earlier diagnoses and better preparedness for parents and healthcare professionals alike.
