Kerala Braces for Record Heat as Temperatures Soar Beyond 40°C

Authorities Prepare for Heatwave, Health Risks, and Water Scarcity Amid Scorching Summer

Kerala is grappling with an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring beyond 40°C, causing widespread discomfort. Despite occasional summer showers, the heat remains relentless, making it difficult even for those indoors. Many residents are turning to air conditioning to cope, but this has led to rising electricity bills, with Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) charges adding to the financial strain. In response, authorities have convened a high-level meeting to discuss heatwave preparedness, pre-monsoon sanitation efforts, and epidemic prevention measures. Reports of sunstroke cases in Palakkad and Neyyattinkara have prompted the expansion of treatment facilities from taluk hospitals to primary health centers to ensure timely medical intervention.

The extreme heat has also raised concerns about water contamination and the spread of seasonal illnesses, prompting officials to advise people to drink boiled water. Special summer disease wards are being planned in government hospitals, particularly for children who are more vulnerable. Meanwhile, the Forest Department has issued warnings as wild animals venture into human settlements in search of water due to drying forest reserves. Additionally, the prices of cooling foods like fruits and root vegetables are expected to rise, leading the government to monitor supply chains and conduct border inspections to prevent the entry of chemically treated produce.

Amid these challenges, ASHA workers, who play a crucial role in community health initiatives, remain on strike, demanding better wages. Their absence has hampered grassroots-level health monitoring, adding to the burden on the healthcare system. As Kerala struggles with this intense summer, residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and take preventive measures to protect themselves from heat-related illnesses.
