During the match at Punjab Kings’ home ground, Kohli reached 769 fours in his IPL career, moving past Dhawan’s previous record of 768 fours.
The achievement came early in the match after Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to field. Kohli, who has been a cornerstone of IPL since its inception, reached this milestone in his 258th innings, while Dhawan had set his record in 221 innings. The record-breaking moment occurred when Kohli hit his first boundary of the match, adding another achievement to his extensive list of IPL records. This feat puts him at the top of the list for most fours in IPL history.
With 663 fours in 184 games, David Warner is ranked third in the IPL’s overall records for most fours. With 640 fours in 272 games, Rohit Sharma comes in fourth, and Ajinkya Rahane completes the top five with 514 fours in 172 games.
The final also presented Kohli with another potential milestone within reach. Having already accumulated 614 runs in the 2025 season, he stood 86 runs away from becoming the first player to score 700 runs in an IPL season three times.
Record-breaking 973 runs in the IPL 2016 and 741 runs in the IPL 2024 are two of Kohli’s 700+ run seasons to date. Chris Gayle’s record of 700+ runs in two straight seasons in 2012 and 2013 would be surpassed by this accomplishment.
