Shubman Gill to replace Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI Captain

Gill is already the captain of India’s Test team and was also appointed as India’s vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, which Team India won under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership last month.

The batter Shubman Gill is all set to replace Rohit Sharma as the new captain of India’s ODI team. According to a report in the sports media on Saturday (October 4), Gill will lead India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, but Rohit will be part of the squad along with Virat Kohli.

According to the information, selectors want Gill to captain Team India in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2027, and so, keeping the bigger picture in mind, he will take over the charge from Rohit and resume the new job from the Australia series onwards.

“Gill’s appointment is likely after the selectors spoke to the Test skipper, informing him that, keeping the big picture in mind, they wanted him to captain the side for the ICC World Cup in 2027 to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Gill also attended the selection meeting on Saturday,” the national media reported. Gill is already the captain of India’s Test team and was also appointed as India’s vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, which Team India won under Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership last month. Gill has captained India in five T20Is but never got a chance in the past to lead the side in the 50-over format of the game.

Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who last played a competitive match in July 2025, will miss India’s upcoming white-ball tour of Australia. According to a report, Pant has still not fully recovered from the foot injury that he suffered on Day 1 of the fourth India-England Test in Manchester, so as a result, he won’t be picked for the ODI and T20I series in Australia.
