New Delhi: In a significant escalation of a high-stakes family and corporate dispute, Rani Kapur, widow of late industrialist Surinder Kapur, has formally exercised her legal right to remove Priya Sachdev Kapur as a trustee of the RK Family Trust.
The move, initiated through a notice dated March 21, 2026, invokes Clause 8.12 of the trust deed, granting her unilateral authority as settlor and permanent trustee to remove any trustee with 15 days’ notice.
Background: A Family Legacy in Dispute
The Kapur family dispute centers around control of the business empire founded by Surinder Kapur, including Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd..
Following Kapur’s death in 2015, his will—probated by the Bombay High Court—reportedly bequeathed his entire estate to Rani Kapur. A family arrangement subsequently led to the creation of the SK Family Trust in 2016, intended to benefit her and all grandchildren across family branches.
However, a second entity—the RK Family Trust—was allegedly created in 2017 under controversial circumstances. According to Rani Kapur’s claims, the trust significantly altered the distribution of assets, naming her late son Sunjay Kapur as primary beneficiary and allocating a majority share to his wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur.
Allegations of Forgery and Lack of Consent
Rani Kapur has alleged that:
- She was never informed about the RK Family Trust at the time of its creation
- She only obtained copies of the document in 2025 through third parties
- Forensic analysis suggests her signatures on the trust deed may be forged
- She was made to sign documents without explanation over several years
She further claims the original trust deed has not been produced despite repeated demands.
Developments After Sunjay Kapur’s Death
After the sudden death of Sunjay Kapur in June 2025 in the UK, Rani Kapur alleges rapid corporate changes:
- Priya Sachdev Kapur assumed leadership roles in key family-controlled entities
- She was appointed Managing Director of the family’s holding company with substantial remuneration
- She joined the board of Sona Comstar within days
Rani Kapur also disputes claims that she consented to these appointments, stating she was in a state of grief and unaware of documents she allegedly signed.
Claims of Identity Misuse and Information Suppression
Among the more serious allegations, Rani Kapur has claimed:
- Emails were sent from her official account without her authorization
- Messages were deleted from her personal devices
- Her access to company records and communications was blocked
She asserts that she has been denied access to financial information related to her own estate for nearly nine years.
Legal Battle in Delhi High Court
In January 2026, Rani Kapur filed a civil suit before the Delhi High Court (CS(OS) 69/2026), seeking to declare the RK Family Trust null and void.
While the court has issued notices, interim relief is still pending. In the absence of a stay on the trust’s operations, Kapur has now acted independently to remove Priya Sachdev Kapur as trustee.
What Rani Kapur Is Seeking
Rani Kapur’s stated objectives include:
- Full financial transparency and disclosure of trust operations
- A forensic audit of transactions
- Restoration of what she describes as a fair family arrangement
- Verification of the authenticity of the disputed trust deed
A High-Stakes Corporate and Family Conflict
The dispute has implications beyond the family, given its connection to a major listed company and broader shareholder interests.
At its core, the case reflects a deeply personal conflict over legacy, control, and trust within one of India’s prominent business families—now playing out in court and corporate boardrooms alike.
