Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has reinstated the medical reimbursement facility for its employees and teachers, allowing claims for treatments in private hospitals. This decision, approved by the Finance Department, marks a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by government employees since the implementation of the MEDISEP insurance scheme.
Under the revised rules, employees can now seek reimbursement for medical treatments not covered by the MEDISEP package, including inpatient and outpatient care. Furthermore, the scheme includes provisions for interest-free medical advances, providing additional financial support to government staff.
Initially, after MEDISEP’s launch, medical reimbursements were limited to government hospitals, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among employees. Responding to these grievances, the government has now extended the benefit to empanelled private hospitals as well. Treatments in non-MEDISEP packages offered at these hospitals are also eligible for reimbursement under the Kerala Government Servants Medical Attendance Rules (KGSMA).
Most private hospitals in Kerala have already empanelled their departments under this reimbursement framework, ensuring comprehensive access for employees. This restoration is expected to ease the financial burden on government employees seeking quality healthcare services beyond the scope of the MEDISEP scheme.
