Vatican City: After more than five weeks of hospitalization, Pope Francis made his first public appearance on Sunday, greeting well-wishers from the balcony of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14 due to a severe respiratory infection, is expected to be discharged later in the afternoon.
The Pope’s health condition had raised significant concerns, as his doctors confirmed that he battled double pneumonia and suffered four acute respiratory crises during his hospital stay. Two of these episodes were reportedly life-threatening. However, Vatican officials have now assured that his pneumonia has cleared, though he is still recovering from a complex infection caused by multiple microorganisms.
Sergio Alfieri, the head of the Pope’s medical team, emphasized that Francis would require at least two months of rest at the Vatican to ensure a full recovery. He also noted that while the Pope had required non-invasive ventilation to assist his breathing, he was never intubated.
One senior cardinal had earlier suggested that Pope Francis might need to “relearn to speak” after the prolonged respiratory illness. Alfieri supported this statement, noting that it would take time for the Pope’s voice to regain its strength.
During his hospital stay, the Pope experienced some weight loss, which his doctors do not find concerning. “He had some weight in reserve, so this does not worry us,” Alfieri remarked.
Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis remains resilient, and his public appearance has reassured Catholics worldwide. While his immediate recovery is progressing well, he will need continued care and rest at the Vatican to regain full strength.
