Kochi: The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) has been plunged into a deep crisis, with all its office-bearers, including President Mohanlal, tendering their resignations. This mass exodus follows the release of the Hema Committee report, which brought to light serious sexual allegations against several prominent members of the Malayalam film industry. In response, AMMA’s executive committee has been dissolved, and an ad-hoc committee has been appointed to manage the association’s affairs temporarily.
The resignations come in the wake of growing pressure and internal turmoil within the organization. Notably, director Ranjith stepped down from his position as chairman of the film academy, and actor Siddique resigned from his general post at AMMA. Both decisions were influenced by recent allegations—Ranjith in response to claims made by Bengali actress Sreelekha Mitra, and Siddique following accusations from actress Revathy Sampath.
The situation escalated further when actor Prithviraj held a press conference, openly criticizing AMMA’s handling of the crisis and suggesting that female leadership could be a solution. His stance, along with the growing demand for generational change within the organization, as advocated by actor Tovino Thomas, has sparked discussions about the need for young and progressive leadership in AMMA.
With accusations continuing to surface against well-known actors, AMMA is facing unprecedented challenges. The current crisis and the dissolution of its leadership structure signal a critical moment for the association, with calls for reform and accountability growing louder across the industry and on social media.
