Malappuram: A high-profile robbery shocked Perinthalmanna, Malappuram, on Thursday night when Kinathiyil Yusuf (50), the owner of MK Jewellers, and his brother Shanavas fell victim to a well-planned heist. The robbers escaped with 3.5 kg of gold, valued at over ₹2.5 crore.
The incident took place at approximately 8:45 pm near Alankar Theater on Pattambi Road as Yusuf and Shanavas were on their way home on a scooter after closing their jewellery shop. Unbeknownst to them, a gang had been trailing them in a car. Just as they reached the gate of their house, the robbers rammed their vehicle into the scooter, causing the duo to fall. Taking advantage of the chaos, the attackers used pepper spray on Yusuf, physically assaulted him, and snatched the bag containing the gold before fleeing toward Cherpulassery.
Yusuf sustained injuries and was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. Authorities suspect the gang was familiar with the jeweller’s routine of transporting gold home due to the lack of secure storage at his shop on Ooty Road. The Perinthalmanna police have launched a detailed investigation to identify the attackers and recover the stolen gold.
This incident highlights the need for improved security measures for high-risk businesses like jewellery shops to prevent such targeted crimes in the future.
