Kochi: The Kerala High Court has granted conditional approval for the traditional burning of the Pappanji effigy at two prominent locations—Fort Kochi Parade Ground and Veli Ground—this New Year. The court mandated that a safety fence be placed at a minimum distance of 72 feet around the Pappanji to ensure public safety, as opposed to the existing 40-foot barrier. This measure aims to prevent any debris from falling on spectators during the burning of the effigy.
The decision comes after the police had previously raised security concerns and directed the removal of the Pappanji set up by the Galadi Fort Kochi Club at Veli Ground. Following this directive, the Club approached the High Court seeking permission to continue the long-standing tradition.
The burning of the Pappanji is an integral part of the Christmas and New Year celebrations in Kochi, drawing significant attention both locally and globally. This vibrant ritual is a highlight of the Fort Kochi Carnival held annually at the Parade Ground. The Galadi Club’s Pappanji at Veli Ground, located just two kilometres from the Parade Ground, was also included in the permission.
Earlier, the Assistant Commissioner of Mattancherry had expressed concerns over the feasibility of ensuring adequate security for both events due to their close proximity. With the High Court’s intervention and emphasis on safety protocols, the festivities are set to proceed, preserving this cherished cultural tradition.
