Netflix is pulling out all the stops to deliver a flawless experience for its two NFL games on Christmas Day, including a special pre-game performance by Mariah Carey. However, despite extensive preparations, the streaming giant is aware of the risks involved. Following technical difficulties during the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight in November, Netflix is focused on ensuring smooth streaming for its massive audience. Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of nonfiction series and sports, acknowledged that even with rigorous testing, the overwhelming viewership for the fight exposed weaknesses in the system.
The high volume of viewers caused some viewers to face streaming issues, but Riegg pointed out that the situation served as an important stress test. As a result, Netflix made significant improvements to its infrastructure, which it now hopes will support the Christmas NFL games.
This Christmas Day, Netflix will stream two games: the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Kansas City Chiefs at 11 a.m. EST, and the Baltimore Ravens vs. Houston Texans at 4:30 p.m. EST. With 282.3 million subscribers across 190 countries, Netflix’s broadcast marks the first time a single outlet has streamed NFL games globally. The games are part of a three-year deal worth $150 million, signaling Netflix’s ambition to expand into the sports streaming market.
The decision to schedule Christmas NFL games is driven by the NFL’s desire for high viewership, with previous Christmas games drawing significant audiences. Netflix’s commitment to sports, bolstered by its partnerships with the NFL and future collaborations with WWE, makes its Christmas Day NFL broadcast a pivotal moment in its quest to become a major sports streaming destination.
