India bids a heartfelt farewell to Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister and one of the nation’s most influential statesmen, who passed away on Thursday at AIIMS Delhi at the age of 92. Known as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, Dr. Singh left an indelible mark on the country’s development. The government has declared a seven-day national mourning period, from December 26, 2024, to January 1, 2025, during which the national flag will be flown at half-mast across India and at Indian missions worldwide.
Dr. Singh, India’s only Sikh Prime Minister, played a pivotal role in shaping modern India with groundbreaking policies during his tenure as Finance Minister and Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. His leadership saw transformative legislation in rural employment, education, food security, and landmark initiatives like the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Dr. Singh’s body was brought to his residence at 3 Motilal Nehru Marg, where prominent leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge, paid their respects. Congress Party activities have been suspended for seven days, including the Foundation Day event. Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, highlighting his integrity, humility, and visionary economic reforms.
As the nation prepares for his state funeral on Saturday, Dr. Singh’s legacy as a mentor, economist, and statesman remains a beacon of inspiration for generations.
