Recent speculation about increased iPhone 16 shipments in 2024 may not align with actual projections, according to an Apple analyst. Previously, it was suggested that Apple would boost iPhone 16 orders due to anticipated upgrades, including new artificial intelligence (AI) features under the banner of Apple Intelligence. However, recent earnings calls from Apple’s suppliers indicate that shipment numbers for the iPhone 16 may be comparable to those of the iPhone 15 series.
Rumors had hinted that Apple might aim to ship around 90 million iPhone 16 units in the latter half of 2024, reflecting a 10% year-on-year growth, driven by the new A18 chipset and enhanced AI capabilities. Yet, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, feedback from key suppliers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Largan suggests that Apple is not expecting a substantial increase in shipment volumes. Specifically, Apple is projected to ship about 87 million iPhone 16 units in the second half of 2024, compared to 91 million iPhone 15 units during the same period in 2023.
Statements from TSMC indicated that there was no notable surge in unit growth, and Largan noted that orders for high-end models this year remain similar to those from the previous year. Additionally, while Apple Intelligence is confirmed to be compatible only with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, powered by the A17 Pro SoC, all iPhone 16 models are expected to support this AI suite, as they will be equipped with the new A18 chipset.
