Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan has spoken out in response to the Hema Committee report, which has sparked significant concern across the state. Emphasizing the need for respect and proper behavior towards women, the Governor questioned why women outside the family are treated differently from those within it. He stressed the importance of societal awareness and individual responsibility, urging that women be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their relation to the family.
Governor Khan highlighted that while the government has a duty to act, the responsibility also lies with society and individuals. He called for long-term programs to build awareness and social sanctions against inappropriate behavior towards women, noting that while the law is important, it is not a complete solution.
The Hema Committee report has exposed troubling issues within the Malayalam film industry, leading to widespread condemnation. In response, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan refuted allegations that his government delayed addressing the report, insisting that the recommendations are being prioritized. Vijayan affirmed that the police have been actively addressing complaints related to the film industry and assured that those guilty of predatory behavior will face legal consequences, regardless of their status.
The Chief Minister also addressed opposition claims of government inaction, reiterating that the government is committed to implementing the committee’s recommendations. He assured that if any women who provided testimony to the committee come forward with formal complaints, the government will intervene appropriately. As Kerala awaits further action, the state government is identifying issues that require immediate and long-term attention.
