In a major leap towards digital transformation, the United Arab Emirates is preparing to phase out the need for physical Emirates ID cards by introducing a new digital identification system. This upcoming solution, expected to launch within a year, will rely on facial recognition and biometric technology to authenticate residents and provide them seamless access to a range of essential services.
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has already started integrating the e-Emirates ID system into sectors like banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications. The goal is to reduce dependency on physical ID cards and enable quicker, more secure digital identity verification.
The initiative was discussed during a session of the Federal National Council (FNC), where member Adnan Al Hammadi voiced concerns over the current reliance on physical Emirates IDs. He pointed out that despite the nation’s technological advancements, residents are still required to carry physical IDs for basic tasks such as hospital visits, hotel check-ins, and banking transactions — creating unnecessary hurdles.
Responding to these concerns, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, confirmed that digital ID solutions have already been adopted for many services. He also assured that the government is actively working to broaden the implementation of the e-Emirates ID system across all critical sectors to make identification faster, easier, and more future-ready.
