Expert Advises Fatty Liver Patients to Steer Clear of Ghee and Coconut Oil

A leading hepatologist has advised against the consumption of saturated fats, such as ghee and coconut oil, for those suffering from fatty liver disease in India. This condition is closely linked to obesity and diabetes, with excessive carbohydrate intake raising insulin levels, leading to insulin resistance and the conversion of excess glucose into fatty acids stored in the liver.

Fatty liver disease can be classified into two main types: alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD/MASLD). Both types can lead to liver inflammation and damage, potentially progressing to fibrosis, cirrhosis, or liver cancer. Dr. Abby Phillips, known as LiverDoc on social media, stressed the need for those with metabolic-disorder-associated fatty liver disease to avoid saturated fats from ghee, coconut oil, and palm oil, as these can increase liver triglycerides and inflammation. He recommended using healthier vegetable seed oils, incorporating plant-based proteins, and consuming fresh fruits daily.
