The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted an increase in rainfall activity across Kerala starting April 1. A yellow alert has been issued for Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad from April 2 to April 4, warning of heavy rainfall measuring between 7 cm and 11 cm within 24 hours. Alongside persistent showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected in several regions.
What is Causing the Heavy Rainfall?
The intensified rainfall is attributed to a trough extending from interior Odisha to the Comorin region, coupled with an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea. This system is triggering rain across the state while dry weather continues in Lakshadweep. Light showers have already been reported in districts like Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram.

March 31: Scattered rainfall expected.
April 1: Rainfall activity will intensify across the state.
April 2: Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph are likely.
April 3-4: Palakkad, Malappuram, and Wayanad will experience heavy rainfall, leading to a yellow alert.
Authorities Urge Caution
Officials have warned that the approaching storm system could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and minor landslides, particularly in vulnerable areas. Thunderstorms with lightning pose additional risks. Residents are advised to stay alert, follow official weather updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
With unpredictable weather patterns expected, authorities recommend limiting outdoor activities during thunderstorms and securing loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds.
