New Delhi: Gyanesh Kumar has been officially appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, marking a significant milestone as the first CEC selected under the newly established law governing the appointment of Election Commission (EC) members. The announcement was made by the Law Ministry on Monday, confirming his tenure will extend until January 26, 2029—just before the Election Commission is expected to unveil the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
During his tenure as India’s 26th CEC, Kumar will oversee several crucial elections, including the Bihar Assembly polls in 2024 and the Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal Assembly elections in 2026. With an extensive bureaucratic background, he has played a vital role in administrative reforms, particularly during his time in the Union Home Ministry, where he contributed significantly to implementing decisions after the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
Kumar’s appointment has sparked political debate, as the Congress party urged the government to postpone the decision until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on a petition challenging the selection panel’s composition. This demand was voiced by Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, during a selection panel meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as reported by PTI.
A seasoned bureaucrat from the 1988-batch Kerala cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Kumar holds a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur and has furthered his education in Business Finance at ICFAI, India, and Environmental Economics at HIID, Harvard University, USA. His diverse career spans key administrative roles in Kerala, including Assistant Collector of Ernakulam, Sub-Collector of Adoor, and Managing Director of Kerala State Development Corporation for SC/ST. He also served as the Municipal Commissioner of the Corporation of Cochin and held key positions in finance, public works, and infrastructure development.
At the national level, Kumar has held high-profile roles in the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, and Ministry of Cooperation, before retiring on January 31, 2024.
In a parallel development, Vivek Joshi, an IAS officer from the 1989 Haryana cadre, has been appointed as Election Commissioner, further strengthening the Election Commission’s leadership team. With Kumar at the helm, the Election Commission is set to navigate a series of high-stakes elections, ensuring a transparent and democratic electoral process.
