A tragic incident occurred outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday when a Tesla Cybertruck exploded, resulting in the death of one individual and injuring seven others. The FBI has launched an investigation to determine if the explosion was related to terrorism. The explosion took place just hours after a similar attack in New Orleans, where a truck was driven into crowds on New Year’s Day, leading to 15 fatalities. Witnesses captured footage of the Tesla engulfed in flames near the hotel’s entrance.
While the FBI has yet to confirm whether this explosion was an act of terrorism, Sheriff Kevin McMahill from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police stated that there were many unanswered questions. Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to the incident, clarifying that the explosion was not related to the vehicle’s design. Musk confirmed that the blast was caused by large fireworks or a bomb in the bed of the rented Cybertruck, and the vehicle’s telemetry data showed no issues at the time of the explosion.
The explosion, which happened at 8:40 am local time, caused significant chaos, with the Trump Hotel being evacuated. Authorities are also investigating a possible connection between this incident and the New Orleans attack, both of which involved vehicles rented via Turo, a car-sharing service. Emergency responders quickly extinguished the fire within four minutes.
